Comparison of Seven Days Antibiotic Therapy with Conventional Treatments of Bacterial Meningitis
The sequelae of acute bacterial meningitis in children who were treated with ampicillin or chloramphenicol for seven days during the period khordad 1366 to Ordibehesht 1369 were assessed prospectively. 165 patients (85 boys and 80 girls) ranged in age from five days to 12 years (mean 31.5 months) were studied. Haemophilus influenza type B was isolated in 65 % , Streptococcus pneumoniae in 25% a...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Intravenous dexamethasone (DXM) is used as adjuvant medication in bacterial meningitis of childhood, although no single study has proven its efficacy against death, severe neurological sequelae, or hearing impairment. Meta-analyses do not facilitate interpretation, because they combine profoundly dissimilar populations and neglect the child's presenting condition. Important ne...
متن کاملDoxycycline reduces mortality and injury to the brain and cochlea in experimental pneumococcal meningitis.
Bacterial meningitis is characterized by an inflammatory reaction to the invading pathogens that can ultimately lead to sensorineural hearing loss, permanent brain injury, or death. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tumor necrosis factor alpha-converting enzyme (TACE) are key mediators that promote inflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, and brain injury in bacterial meningitis. Do...
متن کاملDexamethasone therapy for bacterial meningitis in infants and children.
Bacterial meningitis affects an estimated 15 000 infants and children in the United States each year. The case-fatality rates for these patients are from 5% to 10%; as many as 20% to 30% of survivors have long-term sequelae, the most common of which is hearing impairment.1 The reported mcidence of hearing loss after meningitis has ranged from 5% to 20% of patients, depending on the selection of...
متن کاملP 83: Progression of Hearing Loss in Experimental Meningitis
Hearing loss and meningitis were correlate in some aspects. Hearing loss is the situation that can be shown in cochlear or retrocochlear defects. Cochlear hearing loss is caused by inner or outer hair cell damage (however cochlear hearing loss has another causes, such as defect of arterial spiral ganglion, basilar and tectorial membrane) and retrocochlear hearing loss has neural origin and meni...
